The 4490 is Split-Fire’s largest and most powerful hydraulic wood splitter that has been proven decade-after-decade in commercial and industrial use. In fact, the 4490 can handle just about any size log you can lift onto it! Further, its’ interchangeable 2-Way knife and 4-Way wedge configuration means you can split a wide variety of wood types too, no matter how dense or stringy.
As with all of Split-Fire’s hydraulic wood splitter products, productivity is maximized given our innovative 2-Way splitting mechanism that allows you to split logs in both the forward-and-reverse stroke – essentially doubling or quadrupling your productivity with the 2-Way knife or 4-Way wedge respectively. The 4490 is fitted with a machined stud to the inner slide tube that allows the knife/wedge to be swapped in seconds. This means you can split one (1) log into four (4) quarters in only two (2) strokes; or split that same 1 log into 4 quarters in only 1 stroke with the 4-Way wedge (then load another log to split 4 more quarters on the returning stroke).
“…Due to 4490’s Interchangeable 2-Way Knife and 4-Way Knife Configuration (and compared to the 2-Way knife model 4290); the 4490 is Reinforced with Added Steel Bracing and Welding – Making it Our Most Robust Solution for Commercial, Industrial, Forestry, or Logging Use.”
The 4-Way wedge modification also adds more strength to the frame with extra ‘ears’ installed on the “V” Shaped Log Stops; with reinforced welding on the back of those log stops; and with reinforced welding added to the frame to accommodate the heavier 4-Way wedge and additional pressure put on the frame and log stops when splitting extra large and gnarly logs. Also compared to our 2-Way knife only log splitters; the 2-Way knife height on the 4490 is larger at 9.5 inches (versus the standard 9” knife height), and 12 inches height for the 4-Way wedge.

Powered by the Honda GX270 Engine the 4490 hydraulic wood splitter is capable of splitting 48” diameter logs within an 11 – 13 second cycle time. It features a Split-Fire industrial rated 32 tonnes of splitting force delivered via our unique and most effective forward-and-reverse stroke knife that is pushed by an internally mounted and protected 4 ½” cylinder – which also increases the rigidity of the equipment to counteract frame twisting (and loss of splitting energy).
With this added power and due to Split-Fire’s friction reduction engineering attributes, the over-all splitting force of the Split-Fire machine (versus competitor products) is measurably greater; even versus machines that claim a higher tonnage rating. This log splitting efficiency is also due to our innovative ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW) sliders that glide the knife effortlessly; and “V” Shaped Log Stops that ensure logs split more naturally with less pent up force (and also protecting against dangerous log flyouts or from wood catapulting out sideways).
Add even more capability to your 4490, increase its’ safety, and increase its’ value by specifying the optional Hydraulic Log Lifter. The Hydraulic Log Lifter adds safety and ergonomics to your log splitting activity by utilizing the machine to do the heavy lifting for you – and therefore reducing the possibility of bodily injury or strain. Further, while the Hydraulic Log Lifter is in the upright position, it doubles as a sturdy worktable that also prevents logs from falling to the ground after split.
After-all it is the Split-Fire Advantage that’s established our products as the standard in the Equipment Rental Industry, i.e. the invention of the 2-Way hydraulic wood splitter close to forty (40) years ago that’s allowed its’ operators to consistently split twice-the-amount of firewood in half-the-time, every-time, and safely with reduced physical effort – but don’t just take our word for it, see what our valued customers have to say about their experience with our products and company on our Testimonials Webpage.
